Kirkby Green – Sustainable Rural Homes

Ryland Design were appointed to prepare bespoke architectural drawings and secure planning and Building Regulations approval for two properties in the picturesque and remote location of Kirkby Green. Our design approach ensured the homes were in keeping with their rural surroundings, blending traditional aesthetics with modern functionality.

To achieve this, we used sympathetic materials such as natural stone and slate roofs to complement the traditional buildings nearby, while introducing contemporary detailing for a fresh, modern look. The design concept aimed to make these new homes appear as if they were conversions of historic stone barns, preserving the character of the area while delivering all the thermal efficiency and performance benefits of a new build.

Additional features included timber-clad and slate-roofed garden sheds, enhancing the rural charm and practicality of the development. Sustainability was incorporated from the initial concept thanks to our in-house architectural team, which includes Elmhurst-trained energy assessors. This ensured thermal efficiency was integrated into the design from the outset, avoiding costly amendments or planning variations later in the process.

Set against a backdrop of stunning landscape views, these homes offer a desirable and tranquil place to live, combining traditional character with modern comfort and energy performance.
